With Spring less than a month away, and us recently completely a two month No Spend Challenge (you can read all about that decision here, and I’ll soon update you with all those results), I felt it time to give our newly minted dining nook a Spring Refresh!
This little room has served a multitude of purposes over the past couple years…a playroom, a nursery and now our tiny little dining nook. After making the decision to get my health back in check and finally figuring out a way to feed our family of five for under $125 a week, it was only fitting to have a cozy space to enjoy all the yummy, healthy recipes we’re currently making and enjoying as a family.
For starters, we already had our old Ikea Expedits in the space, and they happen to be a good height for seating. I had also purchased this outdoor rug (currently on promo for $70!) for the nursery. It was surprisingly soft for an outdoor rug and has held up wonderfully! (don’t mind all those spills and stains #housewithkids, once weather warms up, this pressure washer, which is worth every.single.penny, will easily clean most of those stains away!) The make shift tablecloth are just fabric panels (Nate Berkus upholstery fabric found in the discount section at Joann’s Fabrics). So easy to throw in the washer and clean when needed. Again #housewithkids. And the framed art, is scrap wallpaper I had framed in an affordable Ikea Ribba frame. Over the holidays this space was brightened up with greenery and a lit Christmas Tree. It was cozy and inviting, but the second all that holiday decor came out, the space felt dull and uninspiring. So, I knew I wanted it to be a space that had life to it, a place for our indoor herbs, was kid friendly and ultimately an inviting nook for dining and hanging out as a family.
Early this week, in this post, I shared the design plan for the space. I wanted affordable pieces that weren’t too precious for our household, but were also a little more “grown up” in design.
This oversized linen throw pillow is the perfect shade of cornflower blue on one side and rich navy on the other. At under $30, the pricepoint is spot on! To add height and greenery for a centerpiece, this matte ceramic vase ($25) is just the piece to hold tall natural branches and eventually display all my cut garden roses I’m looking forward to this Spring! These counter height stools are absolutely gorgeous and for $89 are a fraction of the cost of similar high end ones. While too tall for adults at our table, they’re the perfect height for my twins to sit comfortably and easily reach the table for meal time…think a very stylish booster seat.
This abstract artwork modernizes the space, while this Giraffe Planter (currently on promo for $18) happens to be my kids’ favorite and adds just the right amount of whimsy to the table.
And of course, what I think may be my favorite addition are these hanging planters (also on promo currently at just $15 each)!
These battery operated Taper Candles are sooooo good! The faux flame flickers and the candles even have a real waxed dipped finish. The kids love turning them on for dinner, and I love the candle lit ambiance it gives to our home. Hygee House, without the worry of real candle flames around kids!
More herbs, because why not! This small planter adds just the right amount of texture to the table and the space.
One more hanging planter.
One more colorful fruit addition…
This footed ceramic bowl, at $20, filled to the brim with fresh lemons, is a great finishing touch to the table.
A quick watering of the plants in my new absolute favorite cotton dress (just $35 and comes in multiple color options, white and navy are wardrobe classics!)…
And this space is ready to enjoy! I hope this post inspires you to bring the outside in and hopefully gives you some ideas to decorate your own home this Spring! Like always, share your thoughts in the comments below.
